The Waves are the Champs

The Word Hunters celebrate their second place finish
with their teacher, Ms. Jaime.
After three exciting rounds of competition in the EGAP 4 Word Cup, it was the Waves that rose to the top and claimed the Word Cup Trophy and the Champions Medals.  The final was a thrilling match that also included the Dreamy Girls, Mafi Meshkala and the Word Hunters.  The Waves struggled at the start of the first game and it looked like the Dreamy Girls were destined to take the early lead, but an unfortunate mistake sent them back to zero and opened the door for the three other teams.  It looked like the Word Hunters were going to seize the opportunity, but the Waves made a late surge to win the first game.  The second game was completely dominated by the Waves, so when the third match started, the Waves were already assured of the trophy.  However, there was still a thrilling battle for second place in the third and final game.  Mafi Meshkala, the Dreamy Girls and the Word Hunters were all fighting for the coveted runners-up medals in a game that turned out to be the closest of all.  The Word Hunters had a huge lead at one point, but the Dreamy Girls found their form towards the end.  Both teams had successfully identified 10 words at the same time when the Word Hunters kept their cool and switched into high gear as their adoring fans screamed with delight.  Sadly, the Dreamy Girls saw their hopes dashed by a single, painful point.

Congratulations to Fatema Ibrahim, Laila Abdullrahman, Reem Abdullah and Salma Khadem on your fine victory for the Waves and Section 2.  Thanks also to all of the students that participated and teachers that made this another successful Word Cup.

The Roses Lift the Cup!

These medals are now being worn
by the Word Cup Champions, the Roses
In an astonishing demonstration of vocabulary dominance, the Roses from section 6 won every game in the Championship Match to claim the gold medals and the first ever ABP Word Cup.  Sara, Fatima and Fatima were too strong for the other teams and were the deserving winners.  Even though Roses never stopped winning, every match was extremely close (see video below). After four games it was obvious that the rest of the teams were playing for the silver medal.  SAAM, Happiness and Extreme Sharks all played their hearts out to claim the second place spot and up until the eighth and final game, it wasn't clear who would take the silver.  In the end, Happiness was able to handle the pressure and their big smiles lived up to their team name.  SAAM and Extreme Sharks were both just a few words away from collecting a medal, but the competition was just too much today.  Thanks to every team that participated and all of the teachers that helped make this event a great success.

Word Cup Final

The winning team will
have their names engraved
on this trophy
Today's semifinal matches were very exciting for the 8 teams involved.  In room FIS-1-21, SAAM and Happiness shared all of the points in the first four games, but in the fifth game Unicorn and Princess△ got on the scoreboard.  After a couple of slow games, SAAM regained their form and finished with 12 points.  That was just enough to get past Happiness (10 points). Both of them qualified for the final despite the excellent effort of Unicorn and Princess△.

In the other match, Extreme Sharks got off to a quick start in the first game, but it was clear from the start that Roses and Lavender were going to be very good.  By the fourth game, Roses had opened up a lead while Extreme Sharks and Lavender were locked in a close battle for second place.  Snakes were close in every game, but a few wrong answers at unlucky times made it impossible for them to advance.  In the end, Extreme Sharks showed that the male campus has some serious vocabulary skills and edged out Lavender to make it into the final with a score of 8 points.  Roses ran away with the match with an impressive 14 points and hope they can keep their momentum in tomorrow's final.

Tomorrow's Championship match will be played at 10:50 in rooms FIS-1-23 and MIS-1-13.  The four finalists are Roses (section 6), Extreme Sharks (section 903), SAAM (section 13) and Happiness (section 4).  The words for the final match are on the website.  They include some Unit 5 words, so every team will have some work to do if they want to lift the trophy.

The Championship Round is Set

The Blue and Yellow Groups ended with some strong performances today.  The Roses had the biggest day and it was enough to move them into second place in the Blue Group and earn a spot in the semifinal.  SAAM dominated their match also and claimed first place Blue.  In the Yellow Group, Happiness won their match and moved into second place ahead of sunflowers and Girls Power!  They will join group winners princess△ in the semifinals.

With the start of the semifinals, we must say good bye to the teams that didn't qualify for the next round.  Thanks for your participation and for making this a great Word Cup.

The Championship Rounds are all set and there is a new page on this website for you to follow all the action.

The words for the semifinal matches have also been updated here.  If you want to play for the trophy on Thursday, make sure you learn these words.

Last Day of Group Stage

The final four spots in the semifinals will be up for grabs today when the Blue and Yellow Groups take the field for their final matches.  In the Blue Group, SAAM looks like a sure thing to make the semifinals, but five other teams have a chance to claim the second spot.  S9 has 14 points but Smarty and Roses are extremely close behind.  Hero and Lion's could also make jump all the way into second place if they know their words well enough.  The Yellow Group is similar, but leaders Princess△ could still be caught by Sunflowers, Happiness, Girls Power! and Snow White.  I'm sure these students stayed up late last night to study the Round 3 words and make sure they are ready for today's important matches.

The semifinal matches will be played on Wednesday and they are already taking shape.  Here is the way they look at this point.

Red and Green Group Results

The Green and Red Groups had their final matches today.  There were no changes in the Red Group as the Extreme Sharks and the Snakes both extended their leads to book a place in the semifinal round.  In the Green Group, Lavender continued to cruise in room FIS-1-22 and toped the group with an impressive 40 points.  In the other Green match the battle for second place saw Unicorns edge out VSS and claim second place.  The Extreme Sharks, Snakes, Lavender and Unicorns will all be playing in the semifinal on Wednesday at 10:50.  Congratulations to these four teams and a big thank you to the other teams that made this a very memorable and successful first Word Cup.

Round 3 Starts Today

The final matches of the group stage begin today at 10:50.  These important matches will determine who gets to play in the semifinal round on Wednesday.  In the Red Group, two teams from section 903 have the inside track to the semifinal, but the SNAKES and Extreme Sharks have to be at their best if they don't want Princess Leyla and Leyla's Widez to steal their dreams.  In the Green Group, Lavender have been unstoppable, but the second semifinal spot is still up for grabs.  VSS, Unicorn, H.K.G. and MSEA all have a chance to advance to the semis with a strong performance.

Good luck everyone!

Thrilling Quizlet Live Action

There were shrieks of joy and gasps of disappointment in the FIS corridor this morning as the Blue and Yellow Groups played their second round matches. In the Yellow Group, Princess△ ended the day with comfortable lead after winning their second match in two tries.  However, Girl Power scored the most points in Yellow today and are the most improved team in the entire Word Cup.  Their amazing 11 points have brought them into a tie for third place.  Sunflowers and Happiness should be very nervous about Girl Power with one game to play.  All three of those teams are only two points apart for a place in the semifinal and Snow White is still close enough to surprise them all.

In the Blue group, SAAM won their important match and now have a big lead with only one match to play in the group stage.  S9, Smarty and Roses are in a close battle for second place with Hero and Lion's also close enough to break into the top two.

The third round will feature new words.  Make sure you study this list, so you are ready for the next match on Sunday or Monday.

On Sunday, the Red Group and the Green Group play their final games of the group stage.  Remember that the top two teams in each group will play in the semifinal on Wednesday, October 10th.  Good luck and have a great weekend.

Round Two Resumes Today

After a one day break from the Word Cup, the Blue and Yellow Groups will be playing again today.  Every match is important, but the contest in room FIS-1-24 will have the biggest impact on the standings.  In that match, the top three teams in the Blue Group will be testing their vocabulary knowledge.  Which team will end the day on top?  All four matches start at 10:50 and will be a good warm up for the EGAP 3 vocabulary quiz this the afternoon.

Day 3 Report

In the Red Group, the Extreme Sharks had a big day to pull into a first place tie with their section 903 classmates, the SNAKES.  Princess Leyla is only 5 points behind and can still qualify for the semifinal with a strong showing in Round 3.

In the Green Group, team Lavender continue in the top spot with their second match victory while VSS surged into second place with a win in the other Green Group match.  They edged out H.K.G. in a very even battle.  Unicorn are only two points behind VSS in third place.  MSEA and H.K.G. are tied for fourth place.  The top two teams in each group will play in the semifinal.

There are no matches tomorrow, but the Word Cup continues on Thursday with the Blue and Yellow groups.
